Shaker Village, check!

Mom flew down to help me move on a Friday.  I took her straight to my classroom to help finish packing ever thing there.  It was great to have her help.  Given that we would be working so hard in coming days, we took Saturday off to do some site seeing.  Since visiting the Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill was on my Kentucky To Do list, I thought that would be a good thing to do.  Also it seemed like it would be a relaxing place to visit and I thought that it was something Mom would enjoy learning from.

So we headed down the winding country road to the Shaker Village and spent the day there.  Mom and I both learned a lot and enjoyed ourselves.  As recommended we ate lunch at the Inn.  After having stopped cooking for myself (since I was getting everything ready for moving), it excellent to have a fresh, homemade meal.

The lemon pie was recommended.
Unfortunately, Mom and I weren't too keen on it.
I was expecting a lemon custard pie.  Boy was I surprised!
It was made with sliced lemons.
I know that lemon peels are edible and
have cooked with them on many occasions,
but eating whole lemon slices was just a little too bizarre for me.

The view from our lunch table was so pretty.

We learned about the Shaker religion, their crafts, their buildings, and their way of life.  Apparently the Shakers were the first to package seeds in paper envelopes.  This particular village specialized in broom making.  I talked mom into buying a broom for herself and bought myself one of the little wooden boxes that they make.  Mom enjoyed it so much that she says she would like to visit some of the Shaker Villages in New England.  It was a great day!

The views of the rolling hills were spectacular.
